The Profumo Affair.

Standard

An elderly lady has just been in my shop chatting to me about Stephen Ward. Apparently she knew him “rather well” back when she was training as an actress at Italia Conti in the 1950s. She tells me that although he was certainly a “live wire” he was never a criminal. He also once painted a portrait of her which is due to be auctioned off soon, hopefully for large sums of money. And until then, she is waiting with bated breath to find out if the courts will agree to overturn his guilty verdict…

Naturally she had no interest whatsoever in buying theatre tickets, she’d just nipped in for a chinwag. If only all of the gabbling hand puppets of boredom who bowled in to my shop had the common decency to be so fascinating and well-mannered. Ah well, such is life I suppose.
